Gratitude: Telling A Different Story

July 12, 2013 by Lamisha

gratitude3

Over the last few weeks in my rush to get things done, I have missed my gratitude posts and I am feeling the effects.  Instead of reflecting back on each week with wonder and appreciation, I am finding myself returning to a mindset of “if only” and lots of frustration about seemingly small blips on my emotional radar.  I have also found that my meditation practice has been very hit or miss and that is also affecting what I like to call my emotional feng shui.  With that said, I wanted to make sure I got back on track with both meditating and my gratitude practice because I know how important both practices are for my growth and sanity.

Coming back from a week-long vacation can be a bit jarring and uncomfortable for some and I had a few ups and downs myself trying to get back into my daily groove.  While I found myself appreciating the time off, I was also more cranky than usual.  Outside my moments of crankiness I took on an observer role to figure out the cause (if any) and to see what it was that was causing me to head down a much-traveled-never-turns-out-good-road that I have experienced before.

Here’s what I realized…

I have read many blogs and articles about “telling a different story” and while I understood what the phrase meant, it never hit me emotionally.  It seems I only understood it on an intellectual level and never really applied it to my life.  Maybe I was in denial or maybe as a student of life, I wasn’t ready to receive the message.  Either way, I now understand.

We all have certain characteristics that have become a part of our emotional, psychological, moral and spiritual fabrics.  Many times we don’t take the time to question if the story we tell is still true as we say things like, “I’m not a good communicator.” or “I’ve never been good with writing.”  We even use these stories to describe others based on how we perceive them and yet we never once question if the story we are telling about ourselves or others still holds true.

We have grown so accustomed to living in a space of familiarity that we will hang on to an understanding of someone, something, or ourselves so much that we assume we have it figured out.  (And you know what they say about assuming.)  Instead of coming into situations and experiences with fresh eyes and a sense of discovery, we use our memories as the be-all, end-all truth.  But the funny thing about life is that things are always changing.

The person I am today is not who I will be tomorrow and the person I was yesterday is gone, yet when we have a death grip on what we know to be true about ourselves or someone else, we leave no room for learning anything different.  And when we have a set expectation of how someone is going to act or react (including ourselves), we generally experience the exact expectation we set forth in the beginning.

So, this week as I was going through some personal challenges, I began thinking about my story.  My story about success, work, relationships, my partner, and the story about who I am and I began to wonder what would happen if I told a different story in each of those areas?  What if instead of telling the same old tired story of lack, frustration, hurt, and any other negative emotion I thought was the truth, I told a different story?  How different would my experience be?

I must admit the idea felt refreshing yet foreign.  I had never consciously attempted to change my own description of what I had always known myself and others to be.  What I found is that like any life or perspective change, it takes time.  I won’t magically begin describing myself as a laid back, go with the flow person in every scenario that I experience, but slowly I can begin changing my story to reflect the person I am becoming.

I am so grateful for this life changing thought that has allowed me the freedom to change how I experience the world around me.  I now know I don’t have to live in the confines of who I always was (or thought I was) and can move into new territory where I am the writer of my reality.

You are too.

I challenge you to take some time this weekend to explore the stories you use to describe yourself or others and see how those same old stories are creating your very existence.  See some things you don’t like?  Try to re-frame and re-phrase your story to reflect what you want to see.  It may feel foreign at first, but just as the caterpillar takes time to transition into a beautiful butterfly, your new story will take some time too.

Be patient and kind with yourself as you explore new territory, but most of all enjoy the freedom of creating your reality, including living the life of your dreams.

I hope you have a wonderful weekend and as always thank you for reading!

Vacation Reflections

July 8, 2013 by Lamisha

I hope you all had a wonderful 4th of July holiday and could enjoy family, friends, and a lot of fun.  I haven’t posted in several days because we went on a little vacation to visit family last week and while I had every intention to prepare a few posts for last week, it didn’t happen.  I am however, back in action this week!

Before I post the Dreamer Highlight for this week (tomorrow), I thought I would share a few things I realized during the course of my vacation.  I tend to be so immersed in how many days I have left in my time off that I miss some precious moments, insights, and experiences, however this time was different.  With over 21 hours in the car and many more relaxing, I had some interesting thoughts and inspirations to share with you.

Vacation Reflections:

  • No matter how much you love your work, everyone needs and deserves a break so don’t skimp on your vacation time.  This past week off was wonderful for so many reasons, but one was the fact that even though we had planned something to do with family each day, it amounted to much-needed down time.
  • Time away from anything provides time and space for growth. My phone is full of notes, ideas, phrases, and other inspirational material that simply came to me while I was in the moment.  Instead of “trying” so hard to come up with a blog post idea or what I might offer in my coaching business, I found they floated into my consciousness effortlessly when I allowed myself some down time.  It was wonderful.
  • Seeing the bigger picture in many cases is far more beneficial than agonizing over the minor details.  With traffic delays, detours, and a multitude of other things that could send you (read me) into a tailspin during a road trip, they are all quite minor when you look at the whole trip.  Looking back I can see how the slight delays and hiccups we experienced during our trip were fleeting when compared to the big picture of our overall experience.  Overall, we had a lovely time despite the seemingly annoying details.
  • Time off allows for you to see things with fresh eyes.  Similar to my second point, there is something about taking time away from everyday life that provides a new way of seeing things.  While the Monday after a vacation isn’t my most favorite day, I realized that I had a renewed sense of purpose and drive for the things that needed to get done.  And since I am so much a “doer” I didn’t feel nearly as overwhelmed or frustrated with my “to-do’s” as I might have before our vacation.
  • Sometimes doing nothing is just as important as doing something.  Looking back at the last week, I realize that much of the time I was doing nothing in particular.  My plan was to read a lot (to get caught up on some reviews), brainstorm, research, and enjoy family.  As it turned out, we only did what we wanted to do i.e. spent time with family at the zoo, the movies, Chuck E. Cheese, and we went skating.  All-in-all, it was a wonderful trip full of quality time with family and time spent doing nothing in particular.

I hope you returned to this week with fresh eyes and a renewed energy for the month ahead.  If you took time off last week I would love to hear about your own vacation reflections.

Gratitude: Anticipation & Eagerness

June 21, 2013 by Lamisha

This week I have been in a constant state of planning and visualization.  I have this knowing feeling that some great opportunities are going to be opening and I am sitting with great anticipation and eagerness for things to unfold.  In that space I have to remind myself not to get too far ahead and simply enjoy the moment (whatever it may be) because I am on my way to something and that is just as good as the actual something.

You may not know this, but I have been actively working behind the scenes on my business and have been leading with my inspirational foot as I plan.  I will be sharing more information as I get closer to my launch date, but I wanted to share my excitement for what is already unfolding.

Over the last month or so, I have been working with a client to test out my skills and coaching model and not only is she doing wonderfully, but I am getting more and more excited to work with other clients.  I am realizing that my passion lies with assisting others achieve the life of their dreams and watching them grow and evolve before my eyes.  It is truly an honor to experience and it is with anticipation and eagerness that I look to my future working with many more clients, some of which I hope will be you lovely readers.

Stay tuned for more information on my launch date and special pricing for the first month of coaching.

May you move into your weekend with eagerness and anticipation for whatever delights you and makes your heart sing and as always, thank you so much for reading!

Dreamer Highlight: Mike Dooley: Founder of TUT (Totally Unique Thoughts)

June 17, 2013 by Lamisha

dream2

Happy Monday!  Let me begin by apologizing for my disappearing act at the end of last week.  Things got a little crazy with family in town and a short trip this weekend, but I am back on track this week with another Dreamer Highlight.

I first heard about TUT when someone mentioned “A Note From The Universe” which at the time was a very profound and inspiration quote.  I of course had to check it out for myself.  Turns out the notes are delivered daily to your inbox when you sign up here.

Notes like the one below appear in my inbox every week day and I have to say they are a great way to begin the day.

Have you noticed, Lamisha, how lacking clarity is clarity itself?

How, if you aren’t sure about something, that alone, has meaning?

Honor uncertainty. It’s the womb from which all-knowingness comes.

Clearly,
The Universe

But, that’s not all there is to TUT, to check out all the wonderfully inspiring articles, interviews, and so much more, check out their website here.

Instead of focusing on the actual website, I want to talk a little bit about Mike Dooley, the dreamer.  I am including him in this week’s Dreamer Highlight post not because of his corporate business experience and success, but because of the faith he had in himself and the Universe to achieve a life full of passion, purpose, and vision.

What he did:  After working in accounting and traveling the world, Mike moved to FL to be closer to family and to achieve a new dream.  He wanted to start his own company, but wasn’t sure what type of company he wanted to create.  After a few months he joined efforts with his mother and brother to create TUT (Totally Unique T-shirts) that displayed various quotes and sayings on them and after selling over one million t-shirts he moved to something greater.  He decided to share his knowledge and experience in creating the life of his dreams in his first audio program “Infinite Possibilities:  The Art of Living Your Dreams”.  Since then, he has gone on to speak in front of large and small audiences, written several books, and been featured in the movie The Secret to share his knowledge far and wide and to help others find the power within to live the life of their dreams.

How he did it:  Mike Dooley started with a vision.  An intentional purpose to better understand the world and to be able to share that information with others.  All he had to do to make it happen was listen to his intuition and act on it when the time was right.  The truth is, Mike knew that he had the ability to do whatever he wanted and that as long as his intentions were lined up and he allowed his dreams to take shape, his dreams would come true.  (To read more about Mike’s journey check out his about page here.)

One of the things I love about Mike’s story is that he is proof that you don’t have to just have one dream, you can have many.  Once you achieve one, you build your confidence to be able to move onto something bigger.  Something greater than you ever imagined.  Life is meant to be savored, enjoyed, and experienced and once we realize the power we all have (you included) to create the life of your dreams, the possibilities are endless.

So, what are you waiting for, start now.

Gratitude: Small Successes, Family, and Living In the Now

June 7, 2013 by Lamisha

I missed my gratitude post last week, but I didn’t want to miss it again this week because there is so much to be grateful for.

When I first started my blog, I had put some time in effort in deciding on a name, but I hadn’t gone much further than that regarding readership etc.  Well I am so excited to share that this week I hit 100 followers on my blog.  To some it may be a teeny-tiny success, but it is one worth mentioning.  I had no idea if anyone would read my words of advice let alone follow my blog, but I am so grateful for all of you who read my posts (followers or not).  I hope my blog following continues to grow through the rest of the year as I have some exciting things planned as my business takes shape.  Thank you for reading, liking, and commenting on my posts.  It truly means the world to me.

The other thing I am grateful for this week is family.  My partner, my son, and I all live fairly far from our immediate families so when we get to see them it is truly a treat.  This weekend is one of those rare treats and we will be enjoying some fun (albeit short) time together.  In addition to family coming into town, my partner and I are taking our son fishing for the first time which should be very exciting.  As we spend precious time with one another, I am reminded to enjoy each and every moment for what it is.

Too often, I allow myself to get hung up on what is coming, what I am planning, what I am creating, and my list of items to complete, that I overlook what is right in front of me.  So, as we move into the weekend, I hope you too embrace each precious moment for what it is and enjoy the beauty that surrounds you.  I know I will.

As always have a lovely weekend and thank you for reading!image
