(Case Study) How Carrie is Creating the Life of Her Dreams

February 10, 2015 by Lamisha

A note from Lamisha: Today I am beyond honored to share a post from one of my beautiful clients.  Carrie has an incredible story to share and I am so happy she has allowed me to share it with you.  Read. Enjoy. And reflect on how you too can create the life of your dreams, even if it means you have to do something that scares you.

“Oh shit, what am I going to do now?” That’s exactly what I said about 30 seconds after I quit my job. Actually it was probably closer to 30 minutes after I quit my job. That first half hour I was too giddy and shocked to have any particularly well formed thought.

Once the relative high of making a life altering decision started to dissipate and reality began to rear its scary head I began to process the huge leap I had just dared to take.

And that’s when I said it: Oh shit oh shit ohshitohshit what did I just do?

After the immediate post-quitting freak-out ebbed and I was well into the journey of “figuring it out”, I continued to pepper my inner dialogues and daily conversations with, you guessed it, “oh shit”.

It took me a long time to finally quit my job. Days, weeks, months of vacillating between “I can’t believe the crap I have to deal with every day, I should just quit” and “I love the work I do and the people I work with and I’ll never find another good job so I can’t just quit” kept me frozen in place. The mere thought of quitting my job without another lined up made me hyperventilate with panic because I’m a control freak and generally need to know what I’m doing and when I’m doing it.

I’m one of those folks who thinks spontaneity has it’s place and time. So when I did quit my job, when I finally realized that the reason I was breaking down physically and mentally was due to the stress of my daily work life, I panicked. Suddenly having no job, no income, no benefits, no schedule, no reason to get up in the morning felt like the rug really had been pulled out from under my feet. And I was the one who did the pulling!!

Along with feeling panicked I felt guilty: guilty that I wasn’t doing what I should be doing. Yes, I was ‘should-ing’ all over myself every day. How dare I shirk my responsibilities? What right do I have to take time for self care and self-reflection?

I come from a family of extremely successful overachievers. My brothers are both doctors with thriving practices who work their butts off every day and here I am, the screw up sister who decided to ditch her job and lounge around doing nothing while spending her savings to pay the bills. The responsible me was frantically insisting I look for a job, any job, right now.

Fortunately there was an inner voice, the nurturing me, very small but very persistent, that managed to be heard over the cacophony of responsible thoughts. That voice was telling me it was time to stop the self-destructive cycle and make a change. After a great deal of protest and inner toil, I finally listened.

And so began my (still ongoing) journey to self discovery. Fortunately, I realized a couple of really important things relatively early on.

First, it takes time. I’ll say it again. IT. TAKES. TIME.

It took a long time for me to realize that I actually needed to stop for a while and give myself the chance to heal, to nourish my body and soul and bring myself back up to great health and emotional wellbeing. If I didn’t give myself the oxygen mask, I wouldn’t have the capacity to do the work required to move forward.

You’ve probably heard this a million times but I think it’s a concept that can’t be stressed enough. I allowed myself the time for self care; yoga, meditation, sleep, sitting on the couch and reading a good book, having lunch with a friend, spending time with my family, knitting, whatever it was that made me feel whole. To be sure, it wasn’t easy to be so generous and gentle with myself; that guilty voice was whispering, sometimes shrieking, in my head most days but I managed to keep my health in mind and shove it aside.

During this time I started working with Lamisha, my spirit guide/cheerleader/teacher/coach extraordinaire. In one of my many emails to her I described all that I was doing during this time of renewal as “pulling back the rubber band”.

I was working on my health and wellbeing, yes, but I was also thinking a lot about what I might want to do going forward. I wrote down ideas, no matter how far fetched, I dreamed and fantasized and talked to friends about my ideas to give them life. I researched Meetups and other groups in areas of interest, I spent time in places I loved like my favorite knitting store to find joy and inspiration. I perused beautiful magazines, crafting websites and blogs because looking at beautiful handmade things makes me deliriously happy. I gave myself a set period of time in which to nurture body, mind and soul and at the end of that time I felt ready to let that rubber band fly.

And this brings me to point number 2, Trust.

Trust the process. Bullshit, right? Believe me, when I tell you I had a very hard time refraining from poking my incredibly loving and supportive boyfriend right in the eye when he uttered those words to me. But it’s true and the only way you’ll see for yourself is to, well, trust the process.

When you’re smack in the middle of the process, you can’t see your progress. You have no perspective which is why it’s imperative to check in with people who really know you, who you, um, trust, to give you feedback as you make your way down your path.

It’s been a huge challenge to trust that the energy I’m putting into this big, huge, amazing journey will eventually produce results, open doors, provide opportunities. When I first started reaching out to people for input, advice, potential work, a favor, I eagerly awaited a reply and would find myself losing a bit of confidence as each day passed with no response. I sometimes felt downright dejected (and rejected).

Eventually, most people did respond in one way or another which taught me a critical lesson. Everyone has their own lives, schedules and priorities. The agenda that firmly occupies my front burner every day is most likely sitting on or close to their back burner so now I release the slingshot and then sit tight. I don’t write someone off if they don’t respond in a day, a week, even a month. My communication may land in someone’s inbox or voicemail the day their car died or they’re working on an all-consuming project at work. Or maybe my message will only become relevant to them in a few months when a change–a job opening, a new idea– prompts them to give me a call.

I still don’t know exactly where I’ll land next but here’s the difference between now and when I made the leap a few months ago; I’m a happier, healthier person than I’ve been in ages. I no longer question my decision to quit (no more “oh shit”) and, instead, embrace the journey.

I have days of great progress and excitement and days of disappointment and fear and know that this is normal and part of the process. I reach out to friends and family for help when I need it. I do what makes me feel good and enjoy each new adventure this brings. This journey is, by no means, easy. It’s messy and scary and sometimes I want to throw in the towel and just get a job doing what I was doing before.

But the journey is also inspiring, and enlightening and has taught me about myself beyond measure. So I persist. I can’t wait to see what happens next!

The World of Infinite Possibilities…

November 4, 2014 by Lamisha

I live in a world of infinite possibilities and you do too.

You may not think you do, but I assure you for everything you want to create, be, have, or do, there are an infinite number of ways to get there.  The only thing holding you back from the many paths is you.

Now, this isn’t a blame game where I tell you it’s all your fault, because honestly it’s not.  We have been taught a lot of things that aren’t true and the idea that there are only a handful of ways to get from point A to point B is but one.

It’s time to learn something new.

It’s time to see the bigger picture and all the amazing ways your dreams can come true and to allow the forces of the Universe to work for you, not against you.

It’s time to break free from your monkey brain that is running 100 miles a minute in order to make things happen for you.

It’s time to accept the truth that there are an infinite number of ways your dreams can come true.

I’ll use myself as an example.

When I set out on this path to becoming a life coach, I did what any responsible and logical person would do.  I googled how.

I found a ton of information on various programs, certificates, coaches, professionals, organizations, books, etc. that were sure to help me get from where I was (in a job I hated) to where I wanted to be (and incidentally where I am now).  I decided that the fastest way from point A to point B would be to find a program, get certified, and start my practice.

It seemed simple enough, but I quickly learned it wasn’t.

I had some road blocks that were popping up all over the place.  For 2 years I was struggling to find the right program at the right price, with the right focus and I was desperate to get on with my plan.

No matter how hard I tried to make this one way work, it didn’t.  The programs were too expensive, not close enough, too long, or just plain off.  And while I was given every indication that this was not the way to do it, I kept pushing.  I kept trying.  I kept forcing it to be that way because it had to be, right?  I mean let’s be honest, google is rarely wrong.

It was the thought that there was only one way to get there that was holding me back.  That’s it.

I couldn’t see another way.  All I could think about was how to get the money, find the program, and get certified already.

What I ignored was my innate talent, knowledge, and expertise that I used every single day.  I was using it with co-workers, friends, and family members.  In fact, I even had my Masters in Psychology and still didn’t believe it was enough.

Once I was willing to see another way and entertain the idea that I hadn’t exhausted all possibilities, my eyes were open and I was ready to leap.  I started my coaching practice within just a few months of this realization and have been working at it ever since.

The same goes for you.

In fact, when you take your hands off the wheel and let go of the one track mind of ‘how’ your dreams will come true, you allow the Universe to work its magic to bring you amazing opportunities you never thought possible.

And by simply brainstorming other ways you can reach your dream, you put energy out into the world that opens the door to some truly magical experiences.  The things that happen as a result will blow your mind.  They will seem too good to be true, but I promise they aren’t.  They will be the result of you opening your mind and your heart to the infinite possibilities that lie before you.

We are only human and as such, we can only imagine a few ways our dreams can become reality and if you are like most, you are likely looking at the logical or realistic paths to what you desire.

Action Step:  Today I want you to do something a little different.  I want you to grab your journal or a notebook and write your big dream at the top.  Below that I want you to get creative and think of all the amazing ways your dreams can come true.  Try to quiet the logical mind that is sure to try to get in the way.  Write them all down and then lean back a bit and watch the magic occur in your life.  I promise you will be amazed.

P.S. Are you having a little trouble getting outside of your logical brain?  I know it’s not always that easy for us to do, but lucky for you I am really good at brainstorming and helping clients break free from reality and dive head first into the magical ways you can create the life of your dreams.  In fact, I’ve created a community on Facebook to keep you motivated and inspired so you can Love Your Life.  Join us!  And if you are interested in working with me one-on-one, but aren’t exactly sure what you need, feel free to schedule your 30-Minute Consultation here.  I have a few spots open this week so let’s chat!

I have traveled the sometimes lonely road that you often travel while chasing your dream.  A dream that you aren’t even 100% sure is possible….

Your heart tells you it is, but the reality you see in front of you scoffs at the idea of getting up every day and doing what you love.

Because really? Who gets to do that besides the posh superstars of the world making millions of dollars?

But something keeps you going.  Maybe it’s the dream or the whisper of your soul that pushes you forward and reminds you that you must keep going.

When I started down this road, I had NO idea what I was in for.  I didn’t know anyone that was kicking reality to the curb in order to dive head first into a life they truly wanted.  Hell, I didn’t know many people that even questioned what they wanted let alone were willing to go after it.

Looking back, if I knew then what I know now, I would have jumped at the opportunity to have a coach by my side to help me start and to remind me to keep going when my mind got overwhelmed with reality.

It took me 7 years to figure out what I wanted and another 4 to actually go after it.  And now that I am in it, I am surrounded by some of the most amazing, supportive women and coaches that help me stay focused to just keep going when it feels rough.

Action. Accountability. Mindset Magic.

Those are the things I needed & still need on this path & I would venture to guess you need them too.

What you get:

Coach’s Toolkit

***DISCLAIMER: This post does include affiliate links to programs I have tried and highly recommend.  I never suggest any product or service that I don’t have first hand experience with. ***

If you know me personally or have worked with me you know that I am all about personal growth.

I am always looking for ways to learn, expand, and grow not only to provide the best service I can, but also so I can continue to reach to new heights personally.

In the process I have stumbled upon some amazing books, practices, & products that have changed my life.  They are things I often suggest to my clients because I like to share the love.  It’s that simple.

So, today I share with you a list of things I not only love, but things that have changed my life for the better.

All time favorite book….

Inspired & Unstoppable: Wildly Succeeding in Your Life’s Work! by Tama Kieves
It is the book I go back to over and over again when I need a little reminder to follow my inspiration & intuition.  I love it so much I actually ran a giveaway earlier this year to gift a copy to one lucky winner.  This book will change how you think of success and it will reinforce what you already know and what I have been sharing with you for as long as I have been writing and that is…Follow Your Heart. Always.  If you are just setting out on your journey to freedom and the living the life of your dreams, this is the book for you.

For setting intentions & tracking progress…

I adore Leonie Dawson for her creative brilliance & her authenticity and the moment I found her 2014 Create Your Amazing Year Life & Biz Workbook, I fell in love with it.  Everything in that workbook lights me up.  It is full of amazing artwork, insightful questions, practical tips, and magical rituals to help you make your year amazing.  She is making some upgrades to it for 2015 and I can’t wait for it to be available for purchase.  If you are looking for something a bit more creative and fun to use as you plan your year ahead, I highly encourage you to check it out.  (I’ll share reminders once the 2015 version is available!)

For money mindset & manifesting…

Another woman I simply adore is Denise Duffield-Thomas.  I have been following her for about a year now and when I was ready to learn a bit more about releasing my old worn-out beliefs about money, I jumped right into her Lucky Bitch Money Bootcamp.  To say that it changes your life is a gross understatement.  It not only changed my relationship with money, but how I think of it altogether.  She covers everything from upgrading your life to dealing with past money memories and releasing the money blocks that we all have.  I also have to say that the Lucky Bitch community has been amazing!  There are so many incredible people who have joined the program that makes this program so special.  This has been by far one of the best investments I have made in myself.  If you are considering a manifestation course, I highly encourage you to check this out & you can even get a taste of what she teaches in her Money in 24 Hours audio for free.

For clearing & releasing blocks…

This year was the first time I had ever done anything with EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique).  I had heard about it for years, but never tried it until early this year.  It might seem a little weird to you if you have never tried it, but the results are amazing.  I tap just about every day and it has changed my life.  I have used it for anxiety, frustration, fear, money mindset junk, and so many other issues I have dealt with in this last year and it instantly shifts how I am feeling.  If you are interested in some high vibrational ways to shift from fear to confidence or from lack to abundance, check it out.  I’ve included a few of my favorite EFT practitioners and their videos for you to take a look at.  Let me know your thoughts.

David Childerley & Brad Yates both have some awesome videos available.

0001-24026277I also want to offer you my free Overwhelm to Action audio to help you get through all the ideas you have so you can gain some clarity on how to start taking action today!  Simply sign up here to receive your free audio.

So what are some of the tools you have used to help you grow, evolve, and become all that you want to be?  Do you have a favorite book, practice, or program that you just love?  Share in the comments below, I’d love to check it out!

Always A Writer

August 8, 2014 by Lamisha

photo credit: Lívia Cristina via photopin cc
photo credit: Lívia Cristina via photopin cc

For as long as I can remember, I have always felt the pull to write.  Keeping a journal of my feelings was my way of processing life and everything that happened in it.  Relationships, friendships, new love, you name it, I wrote about it.  I even took some time in college to try my hand at writing fiction in a creative writing class that I loved.  Starting a blog seemed like the next logical step.  So, when Tamsin Young contacted me to be a part of the Blog Hop, I was so excited to share a bit about my writing and my writing process.  In return, I have asked a few of my favorite bloggers to join in the journey to share information about their writing process.

What am I working on/writing?

Life Once Dreamt began as an inspirational blog to encourage and enlighten women to follow their dreams.  I started it during a time when I was trying to figure out the ‘how’ behind doing what I really wanted to do which was to coach other women to greatness.  It was my way of tapping into my creativity, doing something I love, while figuring out my path.  As it turns out within about 6 months of writing and sharing my words of wisdom and inspiration, I realized I had the ‘how’ all along. All I had to do was begin, in the same way I did with this blog.

I use this space now to share my lessons, insights, and tips on creating an amazing life.  The life you were meant to live doing amazing things and sharing your gifts with the world.  That is my message and this blog is just another way for me to share my journey, my expertise, and my passion with the gorgeous souls that choose to read it.

How does my work/writing differ from others of its genre?

My work is an expression of my soul and my journey.  While many of the themes may not be ground-breaking or new, my experience and therefore my words appeal to those that are in similar places in their lives.  I consider myself a bridge of sorts between worlds.  Being in the process of creating the life of my dreams, I remember what it is like to dream big while waiting for the ‘how’ to show up.  I am forever learning and I am not afraid to share my lessons with my tribe.  I am nothing if not authentic and am happy to let my readers know that they are not alone in this world.  We all have dreams, goals, and aspirations that at times feel as though they are just outside our reach.  But I also know that it is possible to reach outside of your comfort zone, to believe you can, and prove it to yourself.  The Universe is here to support us and give us what we want.  I like to think of my writing and coaching methods as a mixture of magic, imagination, with a dose of practicality.

Why do I write what I do?

That’s an interesting question.  I suppose I write what I do because it’s part of me.  Inspiration, uplifting quotes, messages, and affirmations have been a part of my life for years.  (Fun Fact: I even turned some of my poetry into greeting cards that have been published in the last few years to uplift and enlighten people with my words.)

I see magic where others see demise.  I see miracles and possibilities where others see blockages and I write about it.  I share my message in that way because I want everyone to know that no matter what has happened in their past or present, they have the ability to create an amazing and bright future.  The dreams they hold dear are meant to be part of their experience and if my words can help them find the hope, faith, and possibility where there was once doubt, then I am happy to continue to write.

How does my writing process work?

Another interesting question.  I suppose it depends on what I am writing.  When I am working on a blog post or a newsletter for my business, I usually have a title come to mind or a specific experience I want to share.  I don’t do well with outlines and structuring what I want to write before hand and I don’t really have a ritual to get me in the flow.  There are times when I need to write something under a deadline that I will meditate before in order to clear my mind and create the mental space for the words to flow.

When I am writing poetry or more inspiring posts, I write from the heart.  With love, emotion, inspiration, and lots of feelings.  I often find when I write in that way, I am not entirely aware of what I am saying as much as I feel like the message is passing through me.  It sounds a bit odd, but there are many times that I have looked back at pieces I have written and thought to myself: “Wait are those my words? Hey that’s some good stuff!” Those are some of my favorite moments.  I have written for so long that I have come to realize, I may not be able to get the entire piece out in one sitting.  Sometimes my mind is a bit too jumbled to write anything of value and if I can take a step back, it makes things easier when I come back to it later.  Like many of the things I do in life, my writing is best when it is guided by my inspiration.

Now for 2 blogs you don’t want to miss:
